Lactation Support

Navigating the world of breast feeding...

As a CBS and currently tracking for IBCLC certification, I know that your feeding journey is incredibly personal and can come with a lot of questions. I am here to provide you with the professional, compassionate support you need to feel confident and successful, whatever your feeding goals may be. Here are some of the most common questions I hear from parents, along with my supportive, expert responses.

Q: "My nipples are so sore, and I'm worried my baby isn't getting enough milk. Can you really help with these kinds of issues?"

A: Yes, absolutely. Sore nipples are one of the most common reasons parents reach out to me, and it is a sign that something needs to be adjusted. During our consultation, I'll do a thorough assessment of both you and your baby. I will check your baby’s latch and positioning, and I'll also do an oral exam to see if there's anything affecting their ability to feed. We can use a sensitive scale to do a weighted feed, which shows us exactly how much milk your baby is getting. I can help you with strategies to increase your milk supply, and we'll create a plan together to get you back to comfortable, successful feeding.

Q: "What should I expect during a consultation? Will you tell me what to do?"

A: Our consultation is a collaborative process, not a lecture. We'll start by talking through your health history, birth story, and what's been happening with feedings. Then, I'll do a hands-on assessment and observe a full feeding. I will never tell you what to do, but instead, I'll offer guidance and give you the tools and information you need to make the best decisions for your family. We will work as a team to create a personalized care plan that fits your lifestyle and your goals, whether that's exclusive breastfeeding, pumping, or a combination of feeding methods. My role is to empower you with confidence and knowledge.

Q: "What if I want to pump more, or I'm getting ready to go back to work? Can a CSB help with that?"

A: My support extends far beyond just the initial weeks of breastfeeding. We can absolutely work on pumping strategies, flange sizing to ensure comfort and efficiency, and create a pumping schedule that works with your work life. I can also support you with other transitions, like introducing a bottle, starting solid foods, or navigating the weaning process. My goal is to be a consistent source of support for you throughout your entire feeding journey, from start to finish.

Q: "What if I'm not even sure if I need lactation support? It feels like a big step."

A: It's a completely normal feeling, and I want you to know that you don’t have to have a major "problem" to benefit from seeing CBS. I'm here to support all parents, whether you're just looking for reassurance, wanting to get off to a good start, or seeking guidance on a specific issue. Think of it as a proactive step to ensure your feeding journey is as smooth and joyful as possible. I am here to listen to your concerns, answer your questions, and give you the confidence to trust your instincts as a parent.

Remember, I am here to be a source of calm and support for you. Please never hesitate to reach out with any question, no matter how small you think it might be. You're not alone, and you're doing beautifully.
